James S. O'Rourke
Arthur F. and Mary J. O'Neil Director of the Fanning Center for Business Communication
Under the leadership of Jim O’Rourke, the Fanning Center has become one of the most outstanding business communication centers in the country, if not the world. Members of the Notre Dame community are unusually fortunate in having access to a world-class resource devoted to helping them develop writing, speaking, and other skills essential for effective corporate communication.
In a career spanning four decades, O’Rourke has earned an international reputation in corporate communication, reputation management, public speaking, and business writing, with a particular expertise in crisis communications and management. He is a regular consultant to Fortune 500 and mid-sized businesses throughout North America, and has been called upon to counsel organizations facing crisis situations and threats to corporate reputation.
A dedicated teacher and concurrent professor of management, O’Rourke is also known for designing innovative courses and learning materials. He has had a string of students who, under his tutelage, have won major awards.
The University established the O’Neil Directorship with earnings from the original O’Neil Visiting Professorship of Business endowment. Arthur O’Neil (’35), of Chicago, began his career at the W.E. O’Neil Construction Co. in 1935, a company founded by his father. He went on to serve as president and chairman of the board.
