Jacek K. Furdyna
Aurora and Thomas Marquez Professor of Information Theory and Computer Technology
Jacek Furdyna has distinguished himself as one of the most creative scientists in the world of semiconductors. His pioneering research on the fascinating properties of elemental and compound semiconductors has resulted in the design and development of potent new materials, including magnetic semiconductors aimed at performing new and extremely fast functions in computers.
Born in Poland, Furdyna was six-years-old when he was deported to the Soviet Union at the outbreak of World War II. He lived in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, and the United Kingdom before immigrating to the United States. After 22 years at Purdue University, he joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1987.
With over 700 peer-reviewed publications and more than 14,000 citations, Furdyna is among the world’s most visible semiconductor researchers. He has received doctorates honoris causa from the University of Warsaw and Purdue University; in 2009, he was awarded the Copernicus Medal by the Polish Academy of Sciences, the academy’s highest honor.
The Marquez Professorship was established in 1976, by Carolyn and the late Thomas J. Marquez (’59) in honor of Tom’s parents. A former member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council, Tom worked for IBM Corporation and formerly served as a vice president of Electronic Data Systems (EDS).
