Julia F. Knight
Charles L. Huisking Professor of Mathematics
The director of graduate studies for the Department of Mathematics since 2003, Julia Knight has been recognized nationally both for her numerous research contributions to the field of logic and for her excellence in educating graduate students. Colleagues have called her role as a mentor to students her greatest strength. Often described as “the guardian angel of logicians,” Knight is famed for finding collaborators and funding for students.
In 2007, she was honored with receipt of the Graduate School’s highest honor, the James A. Burns, C.S.C., Award for her excellence as a teacher and mentor and her significant impact as a researcher. In addition, in June of 2004, Knight was inducted as an Honorary Professor to the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She was also awarded the Silver Badge of Algebra and Logic in October, 2011.
A total of six Huisking Professorships have been established at Notre Dame, all gifts of the Huisking Foundation, Inc. Benefactors Charles and Catherine Huisking created the foundation in memory of their son, Frank, a 1937 Notre Dame alumnus who lost his life in World War II.
