David N. Ricchiute
Deloitte & Touche Professor of Accountancy
David Ricchiute has consulted with public companies and accounting firms and has testified before courts and arbitrators on matters that directly inform his program of research. For instance, in one study, he found that any hint as to any attorney’s line of argument can influence an accountant’s expert witness testimony. Another study found that the complexity of evidence in a financial restatement influences which evidence an accountant chooses to examine.
Such experiences also, naturally, inform his teaching: Ricchiute teaches one course that probes the issue of earnings manipulation and the financial restatements and litigation that such manipulation can drive.
A certified public accountant, Ricchiute was formerly on the audit staff of Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). In addition to his research and teaching at Notre Dame, he has served as visiting professor at the University of Michigan and as the director of research for the American Accounting Association’s Audit Section.
