Abraham Winitzer

Jordan H. Kapson Associate Professor of Jewish Studies

Abraham Winitzer is a specialist in the cultural and intellectual history of the Near East, focusing his teaching on the Akkadian, Aramaic, and Hebrew languages, and his research on Akkadian literature, including a forthcoming book on magic and divination in ancient Mesopotamia. He received his BA and MA from Brandeis University, and his PhD from Harvard, and has published essays in top journals in his field. Professor Winitzer is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions.

The Kapson Professorship was established in 2000 by the late Jordan Kapson. A longtime resident of South Bend, Ind., Kapson founded the Jordan Automotive Group, a high-volume Ford dealership. A dedicated philanthropist, he supported many organizations in the Michiana area, with a special focus on children and education.
