Joseph A. Matson Dean of the Notre Dame Law School

Appointed the 10th dean of Notre Dame Law School in 2009, Nell Jessup Newton is a leading scholar of American Indian law, who has published more than 40 articles on tribal property and federal constitutional issues. She is the editor-in-chief of Cohen’s Handbook of Federal Indian Law, the only treatise on the subject of Indian law. Newton has testified before Congress on Indian tribal legal issues and served as associate justice of the Yurok Supreme Court.

Newton previously served as dean at the University of Denver College of Law and the University of Connecticut School of Law, as well as chancellor and dean at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

The Joseph A. Matson Deanship of the Notre Dame Law School was endowed through the estate of Sylvia F. Matson of Bolivar, New York. The position memorializes her son, a 1942 Notre Dame alumnus who died in an Air Force flight training accident in 1944.
