Patrick G. Holmes
Rees and Carol LaBar Director of the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes
A 1979 graduate of Notre Dame, Patrick Holmes was appointed director of the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA) in 2003. He had previously served as acting director and was a counselor in the academic services office. He has worked with student-athletes participating in men’s basketball and swimming, men’s and women’s tennis and fencing, softball, rowing, and football.
Prior to returning to Notre Dame, Holmes spent eight years as a director for the Higher Achievement Program, a supplementary educational program for bright students in the poorest neighborhoods of Washington, D.C.
ASSA is one of the first programs of its kind. Established in 1964 to support the University’s commitment to excellence in academics and athletics, it provides counseling, guidance, and tutoring to more than 700 varsity athletes, cheerleaders, managers, and trainers, annually. The success of the office under Holmes’ leadership is evident: since 2000, Notre Dame has had more Academic All-Americans than any other college or university.
The LaBar Directorship was established in 1999, by John Rees LaBar (’53 PhB) and his wife, Carol, of Cincinnati, Ohio. A longtime member of the Hesburgh Libraries Advisory Council, John served as the Cincinnati-area chairman for Notre Dame’s Generations campaign.
