The Hesburgh Professorship was endowed by an anonymous donor to pay tribute to the man who was Notre Dame President from 1952 to 1987, and who remains the elder statesman of American higher education. During a lifetime of serving popes, presidents, and domestic and international organizations that influenced some of the most critical issues of our time, Hesburgh always asserted that he is, first and foremost, “a priest.”
