The McMeel Family Professor of Shakespeare Studies
Before coming to Notre Dame in 2002, Prof. Holland was director of the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon. This world-renowned Shakespearean scholar served as the Sam Wanamaker Fellow at Shakespeare’s Globe in London in 2010; he was also recently elected an honorary fellow at Trinity Hall, his alma mater and one of the 31 colleges comprising the University of Cambridge.
Prof. Holland is in the process of co-editing the 18-volume Great Shakespeareans, which will detail 60 people who have had the greatest influence on the interpretation, understanding, and cultural reception of Shakespeare. The first 13 volumes have been published. Prof. Holland is editor of the prestigious journal Shakespeare Survey and co-editor of the Oxford University Press series Oxford Shakespeare Topics.
This professorship was established by Susan and John (’57) P. McMeel. John serves on the College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council. In 1970, he and Susan co-founded Andrews McMeel Universal, a leading publisher of newspapers and other media.
