Bill D. McDonald
Thomas A. and James J. Bruder Director of Administrative Leadership
Bill McDonald holds concurrent appointments as professor of finance and faculty liasion for information technology. As such, he not only builds, advances, and maintains information technology, but conducts research on a variety of topics, predominantly in capital markets.
He has served as an expert witness and consulted extensively for major investment banks, brokerages, and stock exchanges. During the Internet boom/bust, McDonald worked at the Schwab Center for Investment Research, implementing online financial planning software, including a patented optimization package.
His popular Applied Investment Management (AIM) course offers undergraduate and MBA students the opportunity to participate in live portfolio management while developing their financial analysis skills through rigorous, fundamental equity research. The students, who are handpicked from a competitive applicant pool, manage more than $7.5 million of the Notre Dame Endowment. Many of the course’s roughly 500 graduates are now senior professionals at some of the globe’s most respected investment firms; many others have launched their own companies.
The Bruder Professorship was established by two brothers, both Notre Dame graduates, through the M.A. Bruder Foundation. Tom Bruder (’59), president of M.A. Bruder & Sons, Inc., was a longstanding member of the Mendoza College of Business Advisory Council. Jim Bruder (’63) is the company’s executive vice president.
