Viola D. Hank Associate Professor of Accountancy
Jeff Burks joined Notre Dame's faculty in 2007, after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and his MBA from Creighton University, and a BBA from Notre Dame. He also serves as the Deloitte Faculty Fellow, and focuses his teaching on topics in accounting. Professor Burks' research engages with public policy questions as related to financial accounting issues, and his paper "A Convenient Scapegoat: Fair Value Accounting by Commercial Banks during the Financial Crisis" was honored as the FARS Best Paper, selected from all financial accounting and reporting studies published in the previous five years.
The Hank Professorship was created to honor the mother of three Notre Dame graduates and two Saint Mary’s College graduates. Funding for this chair was spearheaded by Viola’s son, the late Jerry Hank (’51). A former University Fellow and longstanding member of the College of Engineering Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees, Jerry is survived by his wife Joyce.
